P.J. Fleck and the Western Michigan University Broncos are one of the best stories in college football today. The Broncos are off to a 10-0 start and are the only undefeated team left in the College Football Playoff Rankings except for #1 Alabama. Somehow, this has only landed them a #21 overall ranking.
Head coach P.J. Fleck has been a hot topic around college football this year. The news and speculation have mostly centered around which program he will move to in the offseason. He will be one of the most sought after coaches in the nation.
However, for now, he is the coach at Western Michigan University. The ESPN College GameDay crew caught up with Fleck in an interview this morning from Kalamazoo to get his thoughts.
On getting players to ‘buy in’ to his system:
“Well, we just wanted to be very real. You know, it’s not for everybody. It’s not everybody’s way, but, it’s our way. And I think players really appreciate when the coaches are very real. You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be somebody that you’re not. A long time ago I learned: just be you and the players will see that.”
What is the ceiling for your team this year?
“I think it’s endless, to be honest with you. We have an incredible group of young men. These guys are incredibly resistant. They’ve really handled adversity well. A lot of the star football players we have on this football team started at 1-11, so, we have a saying: embrace your past to create your future. They’ve never put walls up. They’ve never ignored it. They’ve accepted it.”
How does his team stack up against the CFP competition?
“The type of character men we have, I’ll put up against anybody in the entire country.”
