Patrick Kane’s run in Detroit has officially come to an end.
After weeks of speculation surrounding his future, Kane is heading back to where his legendary NHL career began.
The Chicago Blackhawks announced Wednesday that they have signed Kane to a two-year contract worth $8 million per season, bringing the future Hall of Famer back to the franchise where he won three Stanley Cups and established himself as one of the greatest players in team history.
For the Detroit Red Wings, it marks the end of a productive two-season partnership.
Red Wings Lose Veteran Offensive Leader
Kane proved to be one of Steve Yzerman’s best free-agent additions during his time in Detroit.
Despite joining the Red Wings after major hip resurfacing surgery, Kane rediscovered his elite playmaking ability and became a key piece of Detroit’s top six. His chemistry with captain Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat helped fuel stretches of outstanding offensive hockey, while his veteran leadership provided another steady voice in the locker room.
His departure leaves another hole for the Red Wings to fill as they prepare for the 2026-27 season.
A Storybook Return to Chicago
While Red Wings fans will undoubtedly be disappointed to see Kane leave, the move makes sense from both a hockey and personal perspective.
Chicago is where Kane became a franchise icon after being selected first overall in the 2007 NHL Draft. During his first stint with the Blackhawks, he captured three Stanley Cups, won the Calder Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, Hart Trophy, and Ted Lindsay Award, while compiling 1,225 points to become one of the greatest players in franchise history.
Now, he’ll have an opportunity to finish his career where it all began while helping mentor the next generation of Blackhawks stars.

Kane’s departure is another significant offseason loss for a Red Wings team already navigating major organizational changes.
With Steve Yzerman stepping aside as general manager, uncertainty surrounding Dylan Larkin’s future, and several roster changes already this summer, Detroit’s new hockey operations leadership will have another important vacancy to address before training camp.
Replacing Patrick Kane’s offensive production and experience won’t be easy, but the Red Wings will now look to their younger core to take another step forward as the franchise continues its pursuit of ending its lengthy playoff drought.
