On Sunday, the Detroit Lions will wrap up their 2019 season when they host the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field.
By now, you are probably well aware that if the Lions lose to the Packers and the Washington Redskins beat the Dallas Cowboys, the Lions would wrap up the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

That being said, in my opinion, the scenario listed above is not the scenario that Lions fans should be rooting for.
Instead, the perfect Week 17 scenario for the Lions ends with them getting the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft.
Now, before you freak out and call me an idiot for passing on Ohio State DE Chase Young with the No. 2 pick, please here me out.
If the Lions lose to the Packers and the Redskins lose to the Cowboys — both of those things are very likely — the Lions would pick No. 3 in the 2020 NFL Draft.
So, why would it be better for the Lions to have the No. 3 pick? It's rather simple.
Sure, Young would be a heck of an addition to a Lions defense that failed miserably to get pressure on opposing QBs this season, but this team is more than one player away from truly contending for a Super Bowl.
Assuming Joe Burrow and Chase Young are the No. 1 and No. 2 pick (not a sure thing), the Lions would be in a perfect position to trade the No. 3 pick for some major draft capital as there are multiple teams who could look to trade up to snag a quarterback.

By trading the No. 3 pick, the Lions could easily get a 1st and 2nd round pick in return and maybe, even more, depending on how many teams were making bids. This would still allow the Lions to select a player like CB Jeffrey Okudah or DT Derrick Brown in the 1st Round.
Super Bowl contenders are built via the draft and the Detroit Lions should be looking to obtain as many picks as they can.
