The Detroit Pistons announced on Tuesday morning that they have waived G Peyton Siva and C Josh Harrellson to make room for their recent signings. Siva averaged 2.3 points and 1.4 assists in 24 games he played in and Harrellson averaged 2.9 points and 2.4 boards and shot 38.7% from deep in 32 games before going down with a meniscus tear in his left knee.
Siva being waived doesn’t come as a surprise at all. Siva’s contract was non-guaranteed and it was going to become a guaranteed contract on July 20. The Pistons had five point guards after the Sunday signing of D.J. Augustin and Siva was the easiest choice to release. I liked Siva’s game and I liked his heart, but he probably isn’t really cut out for the NBA game anyway. There were times where he really looked overmatched out there, even against backups.
Harrellson’s injury pretty much sealed his fate. His injury messed him up and the Aaron Gray signing put more doubt into Harrellson coming back. Harrellson is more of a finesse big man who can step out and hit a 3, but he wasn’t really a guy who was going to bang down low and grab rebounds. Gray will do that, because well that’s all Gray is really good for.
Siva and Harrellson weren’t going to be big parts of what the Pistons were going to do this season. Tough to see Siva go, but the NBA is a business and it’s all about making the team better.
