What: Detroit Pistons vs. Chicago Bulls
Where: The Palace of Auburn Hills Auburn Hills, MI
The Detroit Pistons open up the preseason by welcoming Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls into the Palace on Tuesday night. It will be the opening of the Stan Van Gundy era in Detroit and here are a few things to look for:
1.) The jumbo frontline
How is SVG going to handle the frontline of Josh Smith–Greg Monroe–Andre Drummond? Who plays the majority of power forward? Will we see all 3 on the floor for the majority of the time? Van Gundy will have 8 preseason games to figure everything out and this will be the first of the 8.
2.) The Brandon Jennings factor
I consider Jennings the X-Factor for this Pistons team to succeed this season. When he plays well and he has his swagger going, the Pistons play well and they win. When he sulks and tries to go 1-on-5, then the Pistons lose. Van Gundy has been known to get a lot out of his point guards if you look at Jameer Nelson in his time with the Orlando Magic.
3.) Who starts at shooting guard?
These 8 games are going to be a battle between 2nd year player Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and veteran free agent addition Jodie Meeks. KCP started 41 games last season, but didn’t earn any consistent minutes under Mo Cheeks and John Loyer. Meeks was signed to a 3-year $19 million deal this offseason and Van Gundy has a decision to make at the 2-guard spot.
