The Detroit Red Wings went through a drought that would make the Sahara Desert jealous. But in the end, it had a truly wonderful silver lining.
It took 40 attempts on the powerplay for the Red Wings to be able to convert, thanks to a goal from Christian Djoos against the Chicago Blackhawks last week. But during the powerplay scoreless streak, fans of the team stepped up to pay it forward.
Donating a dollar for each failed powerplay opportunity, a cumulative total of $5,000 was been raised for the Jamie Daniels Foundation, with the total increasing to over $10,000 over the weekend. As of this afternoon, the total had reached nearly $15,000.
The foundation was named for the late son of Fox Sports Detroit commentator Ken Daniels, who tragically lost his life in December of 2016 due to an overdose. The foundation supports individuals and families who are struggling with addiction.

“More than 280 Red Wings fans raised nearly $15,000 to help us end the stigma surrounding substance abuse disorder,” Daniels said in a specially recorded video of thanks. “You took a struggling Red Wings’ powerplay and turned that negative into a positive by coming together for our cause.”
What a tremendous gesture by the Red Wings’ community.
