The Big Ten conference made it official last month, postponing football season thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. The hope is that a season can be held in the spring. Meanwhile, the SEC, ACC and Big 12 all plan on playing.
But could the nation's top collegiate football fan have something to do with getting things under way quicker than the spring for those of us in Big Ten country?
President Donald Trump tweeted earlier today that he held a “productive” meeting with Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren “about immediately starting up Big Ten football”, and that things are “on the one yard line”:
There has been notable pushback from several key figures in the Big Ten, including Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and Ohio State coach Ryan Day regarding their desire to have a season as normally scheduled. There have also been demonstrations and pushback from parents of Big Ten athletes.
Additionally, a petition from OSU quarterback Justin Fields has yielded over 300,000 signatures.
Earlier today, Chicago Tribune writer Teddy Greenstein reported that one unnamed Big Ten coach said that they're trying to get underway as “quickly as possible”.
College football fans, could the POTUS help get Big Ten football back in the fall?
