One year ago today the world lost an amazing young lady when Lacey Holsworth passed away after a two-year battle with cancer. On Tuesday night, Michigan State University students did their best to make sure Princess Lacey’s memory will continue to live on as they painted The Rock.

Lacey, who was only 8-years old, made a lasting impact not only at Michigan State University, but throughout the college basketball community and further.

Lacey’s story really gained attention as she became close with former Spartan basketball player Adreian Payne and the rest of the MSU basketball team. She was often shown and mentioned throughout Michigan State’s 2014 March Madness run and became loved throughout the nation.

When Lacey passed away, Michigan State University released a statement from Payne.

“Words can’t express how much I already miss Lacey. She is my sister, and will always be a part of my life. She taught me how to fight through everything with a smile on my face even when things were going wrong. I’m a better man because of her.

“She said she first liked me because of my smile, but it’s her smile that made America fall in love with her.

“I know she’s smiling and dancing in heaven right now. My princess is now an angel.”

Payne was right on the money with that statement. We are all better for having known Princess Lacy and she will always be in our hearts.

When Lacey passed away one year ago, reports are that more than 400 students gathered at The Rock to remember her life and to write farewell messages. Now it looks like this could become a tradition at Michigan State, just as Princess Lacey would want it to be.
