Reason emerges for why Minnesota Vikings traded for T.J. Hockenson

Generally, teams shy away from trading good players within their own division but that is precisely what happened on Tuesday. According to reports, the Minnesota Vikings have traded the Detroit Lions for tight end, T.J. Hockenson. Reports are that the Vikings sent a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick to the Lions in exchange for Hockenson, a 2023 fourth-round pick, and a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick. But why did the Vikings make the trade when they already have tight end, Irv Smith?

Why did the Minnesota Vikings feel the need to trade for T.J. Hockenson?

Why did the Minnesota Vikings trade for Hockenson when they already have Irv Smith?

Well, just moments ago, Adam Schefter reported that Smith is expected to be sidelined for 8-10 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Smith is being placed on Injured-Reserve.

The Vikings are currently in first place in the NFC North and they clearly look at themselves as a legit contender in the NFC.

By adding Hockenson to the mix, the Vikings’ offense will not miss Smith while he is out with his injury.

There is no question about it that Hockenson has been extremely inconsistent since being drafted by the Detroit Lions but he has also flashed moments of brilliance.

If Hockenson can become more consistent, this could turn out to be a great move for the Vikings.
