Red Wings Back In Action After Lengthy Break

Matchup: Detroit Red Wings vs. San Jose Sharks

Venue: HP Pavilion; San Jose, CA

Time: 10:30 PM EST

Television: Detroit- FSD; San Jose- Comcast-California

The Detroit Red Wings (19-14-10, 48 points, 4th place Atlantic Division) have had the past few days off in order to try and get healthier as they face a tough California road trip. While they will get one of their top defenders back in Danny DeKeyser, they will be without their best player indefinitely as Pavel Dastyuk battles a lower body injury. The Red Wings come in with one of the best road records in the NHL and they will need to continue their road success as they face off against three California teams who are all playing standout hockey at home. The Red Wings have won four out of their past seven games and if they are able to get a couple victories in this California trip, it would be seen as a massive success for a team that has struggled for the most part this season.

The San Jose Sharks (27-11-6, 60 points, 2nd place Pacific Division) come into tonight’s game with a 3-3 record in their past six games, though they have played nearly flawless hockey at home. The Sharks come into tonight’s game with a 15-1-3 home record. The Sharks are one of the highest scoring teams in the Western Conference and with the home crowd behind them tonight, could mean trouble for the Red Wings. Offense wasn’t the main factor thoughwhen these two teams played each other last as San Jose was able to come away with a 1-0 shootout victory at Joe Louis Arena.

Starting in goal for the Red Wings tonight will be Jimmy Howard. Since coming off of injury, Howard has gone 1-1-1 with his most impressive start coming last game against Dallas where he stopped 43 shots to earn the victory. It will be important for Howard to build off of his last start, especially with these tough tests coming up.

The Sharks will counter with Antti Niemi in net for tonight’s game. Niemi has been a main part of San Jose’s success this season by posting a 22-9-1 record with a 2.46 GAA and  a .911 save percentage. Niemi has always played well against the Red Wings dating back to his days with the Blackhawks, so tonight could be tough to muster up any offense for the Red Wings.

  1. Franzen is out indefinitely as well. He skated with the team the last couple days but he is still a long way from returning, according to Holland and Babcock.

  2. Whats wrong? i heard it was a lower body injury. And is franzen back? we can’t have our snipers get all of these injures, we need some enforcers to protect em
