It has been much debated over the last couple of weeks as to if the Detroit Red Wings would buy out the remainder of Stephen Weiss‘ contract and it looks like that is exactly what they are going to do.
After signing a five-year, 24.5 million dollar contract in the summer of 2013, the often injured Weiss has struggled to find any form of consistency with his new team and by the end of Mike Babcock‘s tenure as the Red Wings head coach, he found himself to be a healthy scratch.
Weiss had 3 years remaining on his contract which means that his contract will count against the cap for six years because of the buyout. The cap hit will be $1.066 million in each the next two seasons, $2.56 million in 2017-18 and $1.67 million for each of the three seasons after that.
Told Stephen Weiss buyout is happening. Clears up space for the Red Wings.
