Red Wings Facing Big Decision on Sebastian Cossa’s Future

When the Detroit Red Wings traded for veteran John Gibson this summer, it instantly raised a question about Sebastian Cossa’s path to the NHL. Gibson is under contract for two more years, and Cam Talbot is still in the mix. Add in highly regarded prospect Trey Augustine, and suddenly Detroit’s goalie pipeline looks crowded.

That’s why Cossa’s name has started popping up in trade speculation. NHL Trade Rumors analyst Rob Couch even linked him to the Florida Panthers, who will soon have to prepare for life after Sergei Bobrovsky.

“The Florida Panthers will have to find a replacement in net pretty soon if they want to extend their Stanley Cup window as well,” Couch wrote. “After going to three consecutive finals and winning the last two, Sergei Bobrovsky may not have many more seasons left in him. He is heading into the final year of his deal at $10 million AAV.

“The organization has Daniil Tarasov, Brandon Bussi, and Cooper Black. But there’s no certainty any of them can be more than a backup,” Couch added. “It appears as though Cossa has the highest potential by a lot. And, there’s no cap space to use any first-round pick to acquire major upgrades at the trade deadline. So why not invest in the near future?”

Why Florida Makes Sense

Bobrovsky is 36 and heading into the final year of his $70 million contract. He’s been the backbone of Florida’s back-to-back Stanley Cups, but the organization knows it needs a long-term plan. Cossa, drafted 15th overall by the Wings in 2021, fits that bill. As Couch wrote, “It appears as though Cossa has the highest potential by a lot.”

Florida has prospects like Daniil Tarasov and Brandon Bussi, but none with Cossa’s ceiling. If Detroit did decide to make him available, the Panthers—and plenty of other clubs—would be in line.

Detroit’s Dilemma: Keep or Sell High?

The case for trading Cossa is straightforward: the Wings could sell high, fill another need, and still lean on Gibson and Augustine to carry the future. But the counterpoint is just as strong—why move on from a 21-year-old who’s been groomed as the goalie of the future?

Cossa has been solid in Grand Rapids, going 21-15-5 with a 2.45 GAA and .911 save percentage last season. He even got a taste of the NHL with one start, picking up a win. Griffins head coach Dan Watson believes he’s close: “We’re looking for him to take that next step and be a good starting goaltender for us in Grand Rapids. If not, he’s going to be in Detroit.”

What Comes Next

Most likely, Cossa begins the year in the AHL where he can still be sent down without waivers. But he’ll push for Detroit’s backup job in training camp, and every save he makes will keep this debate alive.

For now, Cossa isn’t officially on the trade block. Still, the combination of Detroit’s depth chart and Florida’s looming need makes this one rumor worth keeping an eye on.
