Red Wings getting some help back on defense against Tampa

The Detroit Red Wings are finally getting some good news on defense. For weeks it’s been injury after injury decimating the Red Wings’ defense corps. Regardless, they’ll be getting back the services of defenseman Trevor Daley when they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Daley has been out of the lineup since October 7, when he fell to the ice and took an L.A. Kings’ player’s knee to the head. Keeping him off the ice was “more cautionary than anything”, but necessary.

With the Red Wings sitting at dead last in the league at 4.8 goals against per game, they need all the help on defense they can get. With Mike Green still out of the lineup, and Danny DeKeyser needing more recovery time, the veteran Daley’s return is welcomed.

Additionally, Detroit announced Wednesday that rookie defenseman Libor Sulak was sent down to the Grand Rapids Griffins. It was presumably to make room for Daley.

While the Griffins released defenseman Mackenze Stewart back to Toledo, they also said Wednesday that Sulak would not dress for their game that evening. With the regularity of Sulak’s position in the lineup so far this season, and his low cap hit on the roster, sending him down is an interesting move. Smart money is on him earning more valuable play time with Grand Rapids than with Detroit.

The Red Wings take on the Lightning tonight, October 18 at 7:30pm ET.

JUST IN: Red Wings’ Evgeny Svechnikov likely out for season after surgery

As if the Detroit Red Wings needed any more bad news on the injury front, they got just that on Tuesday evening. Young forward Evgeny Svechnikov is likely out for the rest of the season after having surgery.

Svechnikov sustained a lower-body injury in the Red Wings’ final preseason game, a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was placed on non-roster injured reserve at the start of Detroit’s season, and thus his hopes of making the roster at some point this year were dashed. He ended up requiring reconstructive surgery on his ACL.
