In case you forgot that the Detroit Red Wings were in action Saturday night, it’s probably best that you didn’t tune in to watch. Detroit played the back end of a home-and-home against the Canadiens in Montreal and proceeded to allow 10 goals to the Habs.
The 10-spot from Montreal was the most goals allowed by the Red Wings since March 30, 2011 when they fell 10-3 to the St. Louis Blues. It was also their largest margin of defeat (9) in more than 30 years.
Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg was among the dead men walking… err, skating, on Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal. After the game, he called it perhaps the most embarrassing performance to be a part of.
“I’ve played professional hockey for 20 years, I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of anything like what happened here tonight.”
“We basically embarrassed everyone that played with the winged wheel tonight, and we’ve got to live with that,” said Zetterberg.
The loss for Detroit (10-12-5) was their seventh straight. It was the sixth game in this losing skid in which the team allowed at least four goals. And it’s already the second time this season that the Wings have dropped at least six games consecutively. The current seven-game slide is their longest since 2013.
In last night’s game, defensemen Trevor Daley and Mike Green, and winger Anthony Mantha, were a -4 for the night, the lowest marks of anyone for Detroit in that department. The lone goal scorer was Luke Glendening, who potted his sixth of the season midway through the third period.
The Red Wings resume play on Tuesday, December 5 back at Little Caesars Arena to kick off a five-game homestand, starting with the Winnipeg Jets.
