Matchup: Detroit Red Wings vs. Boston Bruins
Venue: TD Garden; Boston. MA
Time: 7:3o PM EST
Television: Detroit- FSD; National- NBC Sports Network
The Detroit Red Wings needed a strong finish and some unlikely hero’s to extend their playoff streak to 23 years. Gustav Nyquist was the biggest hero for the Red Wings down the stretch as he went on a torrid scoring pace in March to keep the Red Wings in the race and eventually take control of their own fate. For the first time in many playoff runs, the Red Wings will be relying mainly on youth to carry them on their playoff run. They are led by veterans Pavel Datsyuk, Daniel Alfredsson at forward, and Niklas Kronwall on the blue line. The key for the Red Wings in game one and the series will be to get out to a quick start to quiet the Boston crowd and get the Bruins off their game.
The Boston Bruins come into this series as the President Trophy winners and heavy favorites. The Bruins are not only favorite to win the series, but also to win the Stanley Cup. They are led by Patrice Bergeron at forward and Zedeno Chara on the blue line. The Bruins boast great depth at forward and also have a very good defensive corps. The Bruins depth is what could cause problems for the Red Wings in this series, who are unable to match it. Boston’s biggest problem against the Red Wings could be defending the speed of the Red Wings young forwards.
Starting in goal for the Red Wings will be Jimmy Howard. Howard was key for the Red Wings down the stretch in solidifying their playoff spot. Howard will need to continue to be strong in net against a talented Boston team if the Red Wings are able to steal a couple games.
Starting in goal for Boston will be Tukkaa Rask. The Vezina Trophy candidate has been spectacular for the Bruins all season long and could very well be the main reason the Bruins win the series and the Stanley Cup if they are to make it that far.
