Frans Nielsen will wear no. 51, the same number he wore while a member of the New York Islanders. He’s the first Red Wing to wear 51 since Valtteri Filppula, who played with Detroit from 2005 to 2013 and is now with the divisional rival Tampa Bay Lightning.
Thomas Vanek will be wearing no. 62, and is the first Red Wing to wear it. Throughout his career, he’s mostly worn no. 26, but that number currently belongs to young forward Tomas Jurco.
Steve Ott will wear no. 29 this season. He’ll be the first Red Wing to do so since Landon Ferraro, who briefly played for Detroit before being waived. Former Wings to also wear no. 29 include Mike Vernon, Jason Williams, and Ty Conklin.
In addition to the newcomers to the team, two Red Wings decided to switch numbers for this year. Forward Teemu Pulkkinen decided to switch from wearing no. 56 to no. 4, which was most recently worn by Jakub Kindl before his trade to Florida last season. Defenseman Alexey Marchenko also switched from wearing no. 47 to no. 53, and is the first Red Wing to wear it.
