OHL to reportedly ban body checking in effort to curb COVID-19

In an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, the Ontario Hockey League is reportedly considering a drastic change to the game.

According to Ontario minister of sport Lisa MacLeod in a speech at the Empire Club of Canada, she said that removing physical contact is needed – not only in the OHL, but in all sports:

“I’m a hockey player myself, my daughter plays hockey; I don’t have a problem with checking in normal times. We have decided to ban contact sports and combat sports at the moment, and the safe return for all sports is limiting the contact between players,” MacLeod told CTV News Ottawa.

MacLeod also said that this radical change wouldn’t be considered without the current situation in the world with the coronavirus.

“I have done a lot of work on concussion awareness so I do take very seriously the safety but if done appropriately in regular times I wouldn’t,” MacLeod said.

The OHL released the following statement:

“Until such time as we arrive at an agreed upon Return to Play protocol with the Government of Ontario, the League will have no further comment on the matter of body contact,” the OHL said in a statement Friday evening.

The OHL plans to play a shortened 40 game season beginning February 4.
