As if the Detroit Red Wings needed any more bad news on the injury front, they got just that on Tuesday evening. Young forward Evgeny Svechnikov is likely out for the rest of the season after having surgery.
Svechnikov sustained a lower-body injury in the Red Wings’ final preseason game, a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was placed on non-roster injured reserve at the start of Detroit’s season, and thus his hopes of making the roster at some point this year were dashed. He ended up requiring reconstructive surgery on his ACL.

At 5-6 months out for rehabilitation, it’s likely that Svechnikov won’t see any more playing time this season, either with the Red Wings or the Grand Rapids Griffins. It’s disappointing because he had a great outing during the Red Wings’ preseason. This included two game-winning goals and an assist.
With their back end already decimated by injuries, the last thing Detroit needs is for their young forwards to start dropping. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.

ON THIS DAY: In 1946, Gordie Howe made his NHL debut
No one knew that on this mild Autumn day on October 16, 1946, history was being made. It was in the form of Detroit Red Wings rookie forward, Gordie Howe.
Howe made his NHL debut when the Red Wings hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs at Olympia Staduim. Though he donned the #17 on his jersey in his rookie year, not yet his legendary #9, Detroit knew they had something special in Howe right away. Skating on a line with Sid Abel and Adam Brown, Howe scored his first career goal that very same night. He’d do that 800 more times throughout his career with Detroit.
