In a twist of irony that already includes less scoring, less power play goals, and less wins, the Detroit Red Wings local television ratings have fallen in line with GM Ken Holland‘s “less can be more exciting” sentiment.
The team's ratings on Fox Sports Detroit have dropped a whopping 28 percent, which stands as the fifth highest drop-off in the NHL. They have 2.16 local rating, which indicates the percentage of all possible TV households or viewers.
Predictably, several teams have seen dramatic increases in viewership. The upstart Columbus Blue Jackets have seen a 110 percent increase in viewership, top mark in the league, while the New Jersey Devils have seen a second-best 58 percent uptick.
The disappointing Colorado Avalanche (30th in NHL standings) have seen their local ratings drop the most with 57 percent less viewership than last season. The New York Islanders, Dallas Stars, and Anaheim Ducks have also seen dramatic decreases.
Ken Holland said before the season that less was more exciting, and team has delivered in just about every possible way; now it seems that the fans are following suit.
