Red Wings Land Veteran Defenseman Justin Faulk in Trade With Blues

The Detroit Red Wings made a major splash ahead of the NHL trade deadline.

According to reports, Detroit has acquired veteran defenseman Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Justin Holl, a first-round pick, and a third-round pick, giving the Red Wings a much-needed upgrade on the right side of their blue line.

The move marks the first significant trade deadline addition by Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman as the team pushes toward the postseason.

Filling a glaring need

Detroit’s defensive depth chart has been top-heavy this season, relying heavily on Moritz Seider to carry major minutes on the right side.

Faulk immediately slides into the second defensive pair, where he is expected to play alongside Ben Chiarot.

While not the biggest defenseman, Faulk brings something the Red Wings have been missing: puck movement and mobility out of the defensive zone.

Detroit has struggled at times to transition the puck efficiently at five-on-five, and Faulk’s ability to move the puck quickly should help the Wings generate cleaner breakouts and more sustained offensive pressure.

Veteran reliability

Faulk has been one of the NHL’s steadiest defensemen for over a decade.

This season he has produced:

  • 11 goals
  • 21 assists
  • 32 points
  • 61 games played

Throughout his career, Faulk has consistently logged heavy minutes against top competition, earning a reputation as a dependable two-way defenseman who can contribute offensively while remaining responsible in his own zone.

For a Red Wings team battling for playoff positioning, that experience could prove invaluable during the final stretch of the season.

A move that helps now—and later

Another key element of the trade is Faulk’s contract.

The veteran defenseman is signed through next season with a $6.5 million cap hit, making him more than just a rental.

The deal also buys valuable development time for Detroit’s highly regarded prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka, who is widely expected to become a top-four right-shot defenseman in the future.

With Faulk in the lineup, the Red Wings can remain competitive now while allowing Sandin-Pellikka to develop at the proper pace.

Deadline pressure in Hockeytown

With the NHL Trade Deadline set for Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET, Detroit’s front office is clearly signaling that it believes the team is ready to compete.

Adding Faulk strengthens a defensive group that already features Seider, Chiarot, and several young contributors.

Whether this will be the Red Wings’ final move before the deadline remains to be seen—but one thing is clear:

Steve Yzerman just made a statement.
