Report: Big Ten to postpone 2020 season, hopes to play in Spring

The Big Ten is announcing that the 2020 football season is postponed with the hopes of playing in the spring.

According to Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic, a Big Ten spokesman had told her “no vote has been held by our presidents and chancellors.”

Chris Solari is reporting that though no vote has been taken, presidents are moving unanimously together in canceling the season, with an announcement expected Tuesday.

The Big Ten has voted to cancel the 2020 college football season in a historic move that stems from concerns related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, multiple people with knowledge of the decision confirmed to the Free Press.

The sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the decision. A formal announcement is expected to Tuesday, the sources said. 

The presidents voted, 12-2, Sunday to end the fall sports in the conference. Only Nebraska and Iowa voted to play, Dan Patrick said on his radio show Monday

According to Dan Patrick of The Dan Patrick Show, a source of his has confirmed that the Big Ten and Pac-12 will cancel their football seasons on Tuesday. His sources also told him that the Big Ten vote was 12-2 to cancel the season with the two teams wanting to play being Iowa and Nebraska.

Patrick added that the ACC and the Big 12 are on the fence and the SEC is trying to get teams from other conferences to join them for the season.

Reports surfaced on Sunday night that presidents of the Power 5 conferences had an emergency meeting to discuss postponing/canceling the 2020 season due to concerns regarding COVID-19. Sources indicated that the thought was that the Big Ten was on the verge of canceling the season.
