The Detroit Lions coaching staff, at least on the defensive side of the ball, is going to look very different in 2018. In fact, some reports have indicated the team is expected to clean house as far as the defensive staff goes.

Some of that cleaning has continued as the Lions, according to the Detroit News, have told two more defensive coaches they will not be returning for the 2018 season. In fact, it was soon to be head coach Matt Patricia who did the dirty work.

Via Detroit News:

Matt Patricia hasn’t been named head coach of the Detroit Lions yet, but he’s already making the calls on the team’s coaching staff, The Detroit News has learned.

Patricia personally called Lions assistant coaches Bill Sheridan (linebackers) and Alan Williams (defensive backs) to tell them that they would not be retained, a team source told The News on Tuesday. The source requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

Sheridan and Williams, who have been on the Lions’ staff since 2014, were under contract for 2018.

As we already know, former defensive coordinator Teryl Austin interviewed for the Lions head coaching vacancy but then took a job as defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals.

REPORT: Jim Bob Cooter ‘expected to be retained’ by Detroit Lions

According to most accounts, it is a done deal that Matt Patricia will be named the next head coach of the Detroit Lions as soon as his season is finished with the New England Patriots. That season will conclude on Feb. 4 after the Patriots battle the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Reports have surfaced that Patricia and the Lions are cleaning house for the most part as far as the defensive coaching staff goes, but what about the offensive side of things?

  1. Actually surprised to see Alan Williams (defensive backs) being let go. Pro Bowl players in secondary under Alan Williams: 2014 S – Glover Quin, 2017 CB – Darius Slay. One other note is that S – Glover Quin was number one in INTs AND Forced Fumbles this year and he wasn’t selected to the Pro Bowl. Now, when you compare Alan Williams secondary for the Detroit Lions who were 4th in INTs in 2017 and Patricia’s Patriots were 18th … I am wondering why our new head coach can’t work with that kind of production?
