REPORT: Detroit Tigers want to trade for Yankees’ phenom Gleyber Torres

As the Major League Trade deadline grows nearer and nearer, you can bet the rumors surrounding Detroit Tigers‘ pitcher Matthew Boyd will only get louder.

Boyd, who has been the Tigers best pitcher in 2019, is likely to be a target of any contending team in needs of a starter.

That being said, the Tigers likely will not give him up unless they get a haul in return.

According to the New York Post, the Tigers have already asked the New York Yankees for Gleyber Torres, who has followed up his All-Star rookie season with an even better sophomore campaign as he is batting .291 with 19 home runs and 47 RBIs.

From New York Post:

Nevertheless, Steinbrenner is more concerned about what acquiring a pitcher would cost in young talent. Already the Tigers asked for stud second baseman Gleyber Torres for lefty Matthew Boyd.

“I think it is important and it’s always on my radar, but we have a very thick cushion right now considering, and I am not concerned about [it] given the pitchers that are out there that we think we have a chance of getting,’’ Steinbrenner said as his Yankees await a two-game series with the fading Red Sox at London Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The Yankees, nine lengths ahead of the Red Sox, relaxed Thursday while holding a seven-game lead on the second-place Rays.

“More importantly to me is what we would have to give up,” Steinbrenner said. “That’s more important to me than that threshold. None of us like to give up very good young players, but we have in years past and I think and a lot of times it has paid off, but it is always my biggest concern: What am I losing? What future am I giving up?”

Though I do believe the Tigers could get a decent return for Boyd, he has cooled down quite a bit since his hot start to the season and I highly doubt they could land a young player like Gleyber Torres.

That being said, it is nice to see that Al Avila is shooting for the stars when it comes to trading his best pitcher.
