According to The Athletic writer Rob Biertempfel, the Tigers have interviewed former utility man Don Kelley for the job. However, he’s not regarded as one of the leading candidates:

Don Kelly

During his MLB career, Kelly played every position on the field, even pitching. He first came to the Tigers in 2009, where he remained until 2015. After his playing career ended, he served as a scout and assistant on the player development staff before being promoted to Major League Scout. He also later served as the first base coach of the Houston Astros, and is currently the bench coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Thames and the Yankees had their season ended by the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.

Appearing mostly in left field and as a designated hitter, Thames blasted 115 home runs and 301 RBIs during his MLB career, which ran from 2002 to 2011.

He appeared in 485 career games with the Tigers, and also had stints with the Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Texas Rangers.
