REPORT: Justin Verlander vetoes trade to Houston

Houston you have a problem. With 45 minutes to go before the waiver trade deadline approached, Chris McCoskey of the Detroit News claimed the Houston Astros and the Detroit Tigers had a deal in place for Justin Verlander.

However, ten minutes later the deal was off thanks to a Justin Verlander veto.

Verlander’s name has been on the trading block since the start of July, but the price tag always seemed a bit too steep for an aging starter that is making well over $70 million the next three years, even if that player is one of the best in the last decade.

Over his career with the Tigers, Verlander racked up career 3.49 ERA, 2,373 strikeouts, and a WAR of 54.1. In short, he’s been damn good. He’s been the face of our franchise and even given the fans the excitement of watching our guy throw not one, but two, no hitters.

Opinions differed on whether or not the Tigers should move the veteran righty. Some think it best he moves on and chases a ring with a contender, while others believe that he should remain a Tiger for the rest of his career. However, with the trade of Justin Upton earlier in the day, it was more and more likely that JV would be moved.

While Verlander’s name has been brought up into numerous conversations about different destinations, nothing has happened. Likely, it could this offseason, but for now, Justin Verlander will remain a Tiger.
