We sincerely apologize, but this isn’t a cruel early April Fools joke.

According to Detroit Red Wings beat writer Ansar Khan of MLive, the team is expected to bring back maligned general manager Ken Holland for next season – “with or without a contract”.

Holland’s contract expires at the end of this season that will see the Red Wings miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season, the first time they’ve missed in back to back seasons in over three decades.

Additionally, head coach Jeff Blashill is expected back for his fourth season behind the bench. The team is currently mired in a horrific slump, having won just one of their past 14 games.

Holland currently is the longest tenured NHL general manager along with Nashville’s David Poile. Khan indicated that some clarity on this situation is expected at or around the time of the regular season finale on April 7 and the subsequent locker room clean out day.

The Detroit Red Wings are officially out of playoff contention contention for the second year in a row, the first time that has happened in over three decades.

Meanwhile, the contract of long-tenured general manager Ken Holland is up at the end of this season. While Red Wings ownership has been mum regarding his future with the team, it’s clear that fans are frustrated with the moves he’s made in recent years and feel that a new direction and new figure to lead the rebuild is necessary for a return to glory.

Holland himself said on Friday that he hasn’t spoken with ownership regarding his future, but that he’s comfortable with his career status.

“From my perspective, I’m not too concerned,” he said. “I’m very comfortable where I’m at in my career.”
