When the Major League Baseball trade deadline passed without many of the Detroit Tigers big name players going anywhere, many believed it was a done deal those players would automatically remain in the Motor City for the remainder of the 2017 season.

Of course, that’s not necessarily the case as there is still an opportunity for players move to a new team if they are placed on revocable waivers and claimed by another team, or if they clear waivers completely, making them eligible to be traded to any team in the league.

For a player to be claimed and then traded, the player would first have to be placed on revocable waivers by a team, such as what the Tigers did with second baseman Ian Kinsler. Kinsler would then have to be claimed by another team, which he was. Once he was officially claimed, the Tigers then had 48 hours to work out a trade with the claiming team. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Tigers did have a brief discussion with the claiming team about making a deal for Kinsler but they could not come to an agreement.

Other Tigers claimed

Heyman noted that two other Tigers who were claimed off of waivers were Jose Iglesias and Michael Fulmer. Though both of those players were claimed, deals were obviously not made as both players currently remain on the Tigers roster. It’s interesting to keep in mind that it’s also a possibility a team claimed them just to block a trade to another team in the league.

Fulmer’s name is one which seemed to come up quite often before the trade deadline passed as many “experts” thought the Tigers could get a gigantic haul for their talented right-hander. Either that was not true, or Tigers general manager Al Avila was not quite ready to pull the trigger on dealing his best young pitcher.

5 Other Tigers who cleared waivers

Everyone knows that not long after the trade deadline passed, the Tigers placed Justin Verlander on waivers. JV cleared waivers without anything happening and he has been pitching well ever since.

But what most did not realize is that Verlander was not the only big name player from the Tigers to be placed on waivers. According to Heyman, Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Jordan Zimmermann, Nick Castellanos, and Justin Upton were all placed on waivers but cleared.

Remember, just because those players cleared waivers does not mean they will not be traded at some point in the future. But it is probably much more likely they are dealt this winter rather than prior to the end of the 2017 season.
