ESPN’s Marc Stein is reporting the Detroit Pistons have claimed small forward Shawne Williams off waivers, two days after his contact was bought out by the New Orleans Pelicans.
Williams, who last played for the Miami Heat, was a part of a three-team deal that sent Goran Dragic to the Heat last week. Williams was averaging 6.6 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game for coming off the bench in Miami prior to the trade. He signed a two-year $2.5 million deal at to the start of the 2014-2015 season.
Williams fits well into the Stan Van Gundy system. He is a stretch four and has the capability to hit from deep. He will be filling the role left by Jonas Jerebko and will likely split time with Anthony Tolliver off the bench. This move will continue help the Pistons with their playoff push, as they currently stand just one game back of the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference.
