REPORT: Pistons express interest in Danny Green

According to Ken Berger of CBS Sports, the Detroit Pistons have shown interest in signing San Antonio Spurs guard/forward Danny Green.

Green will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and will likely be coveted by teams looking for a very good shooter (41.8% from 3-pt range in 2014-2015) and a smart, aggressive defender. He was drafted by Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009 and has spent the last five seasons with the Spurs.

Stan Van Gundy and Pistons have made it very clear about their intentions when free agency begins on July 1. These intentions include filling the position of starting small forward. Here is what Van Gundy told Keith Langlois of

When the clock strikes midnight on July 1, Stan Van Gundy’s first course of action will be to call Reggie Jackson. Minutes later, he’ll place two calls to candidates to fill the last remaining open starting berth in the Pistons 2015-16 lineup, small forward.

“At the top, really two guys that we’ll go after hard right away and try to make a big play for that we think are not only good players but really fit with the way we want to play,” Van Gundy said Saturday.

In addition to Green, the Pistons have also been linked to Tobias Harris who is a restricted free agent thought to be looking for a max contract.

Chances are the Pistons will go hard after Green or DeMarre Carrol of the Atlanta Hawks first and foremost as they are both unrestricted free agents. If those do not pan out then Van Gundy would make a bid for a restricted player.

“There’s a real advantage in doing the unrestricted first,” Van Gundy said. “The problem is if you go the other way, the unrestricted guys will virtually certainly be gone, so that’s a huge part of it in terms of strategy. We think there’s a couple of very good unrestricted guys out there that fit what we want and I think we’ll take first shot at them. But also while exploring what’s going on with some of the restricted guys. We think we’ve got some pretty good veteran options if we get beyond those first couple of guys.”

Many different scenarios seem to arise each year when the free agency period hits, but there is little question that Van Gundy and the Pistons will place all of their chips on the table in hopes of landing a starting small forward. The only question is, will they land their guy?
