Report: Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman to sign Swedish star Mathias Brome

The Detroit Red Wings appear to have reinforcements headed to the Motor City from Sweden, a nation they’ve profited from greatly!

Elliotte Friedman of SportsNet is reporting that Swedish forward Mathias Brome will be headed to Hockeytown on a one year, two-way deal:

With 43 points in 52 games last season for Orebro HK in the Swedish Hockey League, he was sixth overall in League scoring. He had reportedly been drawing interest from other NHL teams, including the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals.

Here’s how he’s described:

“Brome is a late-bloomer that only found himself a few short years ago in Sweden’s professional ranks, at which point his speed, puck skills and peskiness made him a top-flight scorer for Orebro HK,” says JD Burke, editor-in-chief of EliteProspects. “He’s defensively responsible, and he might even have utility on an NHL penalty kill. His scoring profile, while impressive relative to the SHL, isn’t what one might expect from a high-end piece, particularly when one adjusts for age, but the parts of his game that make him successful in Sweden are highly transferrable to the NHL.”

We’re looking forward to seeing him in the Winged Wheel!
