Well, this probably isn’t the news that most Detroit Red Wings fans were expecting.
NHL Insider Chris Nichols reported on Tuesday that per TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the Red Wings have gotten plenty of interest from other teams about defenseman Brendan Smith. However, the team just might not be ready to part ways with him.

Smith is currently in the final year of a two-year, $5.5 million contract he signed in June of 2015, and has two goals and five points in 33 games played this season.
Though his offensive development hasn’t turned out to be what the Red Wings envisioned, Smith has been a dependable teammate. His strong skating makes him an asset, but he’s often been prone to defensive errors.
Despite the rumors swirling around, Smith says that he’s just trying to focus on the Red Wings.
“I’m just going to keep trying to play and get better and try to help the team win,” Smith said. “I have no idea (what will happen). I think that stuff is all situational with how the league’s going and how teams are winning and if we keep winning, I’m not sure.”
The NHL’s trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET on March 1.
