Fresh off his second straight Stanley Cup championship with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Daley is known for his strong skating and puck passing ability will aid Detroit’s defense, which has been in dire need of improvement. One Eastern Conference scout attested to his puck moving abilities:

“He’s a fourth forward,” the unnamed scout said. “He’ll give them great puck movement. He’s not a shooter. He’s not a difference-maker on the power play.”

Daley was born October 9, 1983, in Toronto. He was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 2002 NHL Draft from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League. After making his NHL debut with the Stars during the 2003-04 NHL Season, he became a regular in 2005-06, playing in a career-high 81 games, tallying 14 points.

He became a fixture on the Stars’ blueline and was eventually named an assistant captain. After amassing a career-high 38 points in 2014-15, Daley was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks along with forward Ryan Garbutt in exchange for Patrick Sharp. He never really meshed with the Blackhawks, appearing in 29 games and amassing only six assists. He soon found himself on the move again that December, being swapped to the Penguins for Rob Scuderi.

Daley helped the Penguins to the 2016 Stanley Cup title, and he was the first player that Sidney Crosby passed the Cup to after raising it himself.

Daley and the Penguins would repeat as Stanley Cup champions in 2017, becoming the first team since the Red Wings in 1997 and 1998 to win back-to-back championships. He missed a portion of this past season following arthroscopic knee surgery, but still put up 19 points in 56 games. He was one of Pittsburgh’s most consistent defensemen this past playoff, with one goal and four assists in 21 games, and a plus-7 plus-minus rating.

In 894 career NHL games, Daley has scored 78 goals with 200 assists. He also has a career plus/minus rating of +22.
