The Detroit Red Wings are struggling mightily, having lost nine of their past 10 games and quickly sinking in the Eastern Conference standings.

According to a report from Finland, they could potentially be looking to add a former top NHL draft pick to their squad. Iltalehti, a Finnish newspaper, has reported that general manager Steve Yzerman is going to Finland to scout Jesse Puljujärvi. He was drafted 4th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2016 NHL Draft.

This is the translation from the piece:

“Jesse Puljujärve, who plays a great season in the league, is about to be watched in Finland next week as he wears a Lions jersey. According to information from Iltalehti, Detroit Red Wings boss Steve Yzerman is about to enter the Karelia tournament. The NHL legend had recently announced his arrival.”

In 139 NHL games, Puljujärvi has scored 17 goals with 20 assists. He left the Oilers to sign with Oulun Kärpät, a professional team in the top-tier Finnish Liiga.

The Oilers still technically own Puljujärvi’s rights, and of course are now led by former Red Wings GM Ken Holland. Could a deal potentially be reached between Detroit and Edmonton?
