A week ago, the Detroit Red Wings acquired D Marc Staal and a second-round pick from the New York Rangers in exchange for future considerations.
Now, according to Elliotte Friedman, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman could make what I am calling a trade/trade back deal with his former team, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
On his latest 31 Thoughts podcast, Friedman suggested that Lightning GM Julien BriseBois could trade one of their restricted free agents to the Red Wings with a sweetener. Detroit would then sign the player and then trade the player back a few months later at a reduced rate with the Red Wings keeping some of the salary.
Friedman on 31 Thoughts podcast says people are convinced BriseBois could trade one of their RFAs to Detroit with a sweetner, Detroit signs them then they trade them back a few months later at a reduced rate with Detroit keeping some of the salary.

Friedman was not specific about which Lightning players could be dealt but below is a list of all of the RFAs they have.
As far as the “sweetener” goes, we assume that Yzerman would be looking for draft picks, as he believes in building a team through the NHL Draft, rather than acquiring free agents.
