Detroit Tigers skipper Ron Gardenhire is in his third year on the job since taking over from Brad Ausmus, and it happens to be the final year of his contract.
And it's been easily the most challenging of his career thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has contributed to him admittedly feeling worn out.
So what does the future hold? Will Gardenhire have a chance to see the team's rebuild through, or will they ultimately decide to go in a different direction? Since his hiring in Detroit, he's compiled a 124-228 record after having spent 2002-2014 with the Minnesota Twins, winning six divisional titles.
While Gardenhire is happy in Detroit, he's not ready to talk about a potential contract extension with general manager Al Avila – nor has Avila brought it up.
“No,” he said. “I don’t typically do that during the year. It’s not something I’m worried about at all, to tell you the truth. I have a contract for three years. I’ve not ever come close to talking about that. I don’t really want to, not until the season is over.”
The 62 year old Gardenhire has already taken on cancer, and right now is just simply focused on getting through the current season.
“I’m just trying to get through this thing,” he said. “It’s not something I am too awfully worried about either way. I’ve been doing this a long, long time. I’ll make the decision as we go along, toward the end of this thing.”
