Rookie running back Dwayne Washington ‘building confidence in coaching staff’

Detroit Lions rookie running back Dwayne Washington, who impressed during the preseason, is doing his part to keep eyes on him to this point of the season.

“I think he’s building confidence in our coaching staff and the other offensive players on the team with the way he’s going about his business, the way he’s playing on Sunday,” Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said via the Detroit Lions. “That’s a good thing for a young player to do. Generally bodes well as he’s going along to kind of keep doing that, keep building confidence in the coaches, the play caller, the quarterback, your offensive teammates, all that stuff. I think he’s doing a good job of that. He’s got to keep it going.”

Drafted in the seventh round because of his physical style of running the ball, Washington has seen his amount of touches increase in each of his first three games in the NFL. He had two runs in the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, four runs in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans, and 10 runs last weekend against the Green Bay Packers. He has a total of 70 rushing yards and one touchdown. Washington also caught the only pass he has been targeted on this season, although it was for a three yard loss.

Cooter didn’t seem interested in talking about ball security when it comes to Washington, however. “Obviously it’s a very big point of emphasis for us,” he said. “I’m a little bit of a believer that you work on it, it’s important, but I’m not a big believer in talking about it.”

Detroit Lions land highly coveted defensive lineman

In Washington’s three years at the University of Washington, he ran for a total of 1,377 yards and 17 touchdowns, while also snagging 41 catches for 411 yards and four touchdowns. With Ameer Abdullah on the shelf for the foreseeable future, expect to see Washington continue to play an important role in the Lions offense.
