The NFL community is waking up to heartbreaking news, former Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Lions running back Rudi Johnson has died at the age of 45.
TMZ first reported the news Tuesday morning, citing family sources. The cause of death has not been made public, but those close to Johnson shared that he had been struggling with mental health issues and the possible long-term effects of CTE.

Johnson’s career is remembered fondly, especially his stretch in the mid-2000s when he was one of the most consistent and punishing runners in the NFL. Drafted by Cincinnati in 2001, Johnson exploded in his third season, rushing for nearly 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. Over the next three years, he piled up more than 4,000 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns, cementing his place as a fan favorite.
Detroit fans will remember Johnson’s final NFL season in 2008 when he suited up for the Lions. During that season, Johnson rushed for 237 yards on 76 carries, scoring two total touchdowns.
Before his professional career, he starred at Auburn, winning SEC Player of the Year honors. Off the field, Johnson poured his energy into giving back, creating a foundation dedicated to helping children and families through community programs.
While his playing days are etched in highlight reels, his loved ones say his true legacy was his heart, doing everything he could to support others.
Rest in peace, Rudi Johnson.
