Inside the Article:
The 2023 NHL Draft is just days away, and it is going to be extremely interesting to see what Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman decides to do. According to a source of Detroit Sports Nation that has requested to remain anonymous, “they have it on great authority that the Wings have a handshake deal in place” to acquire Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators during the first round of the draft.
Rumor: Detroit Red Wings have handshake deal in place to acquire Alex DeBrincat
Our source indicated that the Red Wings would send Filip Zadina, the No. 17 overall pick, and either one of Detroit’s second-round picks this year or Boston’s first-rounder next year to the Senators in exchange for DeBrincat.
That being said, there is a catch to this trade going down. According to the source, for the trade to happen, the deal is contingent on two things. “One being that a certain unknown prospect must be available for Ottawa to pick at 17, and the second being that an extension has to be agreed upon with DeBrincat, which shouldn’t be terribly hard to accomplish because Detroit is on his list of desired cities to play in.”
Key Points
- Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is reportedly involved in trade discussions to acquire Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators during the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft.
- The potential trade would involve the Red Wings sending Filip Zadina, the No. 17 overall pick, and either one of their second-round picks this year or Boston's first-round pick next year to the Senators in exchange for DeBrincat.
- The trade is contingent on two factors: the availability of a certain undisclosed prospect for the Ottawa Senators to pick at 17 and reaching an agreement on a contract extension with DeBrincat. However, the latter condition is likely to be fulfilled as Detroit is reportedly on DeBrincat's list of desired cities to play in.
Bottom Line: DeBrincat could be headed to the Detroit Red Wings
Alex DeBrincat, who is a native of Farmington Hills, stands out as a top-tier player generating significant interest in the trade market. Speculation has connected DeBrincat to the Red Wings, and considering he has his prime years still in front of him, it seems like a move Yzerman would like to make.
This sounds like pure BS. LOL
Always the last one to know, eh? ;)
An awful lot of ‘if’s’ in this deal! How can anyone protect #17 until it happens. If #17 goes to Ottawa and they take Zadina – then ONLY a 2nd round pick! That gives Ottawa 2 – 1sts and a second. That’s plenty. Also, I have to believe that the contract will be for $8MM or less.
So, if everything is in place – then Debrincet comes over. Well -sorry, that does NOT work. If a big forward coming in a trade SY has to know to figure out his #9. It DOES make a difference!
Pass, not for two first round picks.
That would be a wasted opportunity… We have plenty of young talent and this team needs to improve now not 5 years from now. If Dorion pulls the trigger on this deal I burn my seasons tickets…. I’m done and so will a lot of fans.
How is not getting Debrincat helping us win now? Your logic makes no sense….60-80pts sounds like a good thing for winning now…
I like the player but at that price, we can get a good Center such as Dubois. I think Raymond will score more this year and we can make a smaller David Perron type of splash to get a goal scorer.
The idea of sitting there at 17 during the draft only to have Ottawa tell us that their player is not there so the deal is off is ridiculous. If I were Yzerman, I would say here is the 17th, take it or leave it right now and if you don’t want it, we will find another team to deal with. Also, if there was ever a year not to deal a first round pick, it is this one. At 9 and 17, we would be getting two impact players no doubt.
From what I recently saw it is Zadina and a 2nd going to OTT. The hang up is not the 17 pick but getting him to agree on a contract. It will be interesting to see what happens.
