Rumor: Jose Iglesias being targeted by Padres

The Tigers are prepared and content to depart the Winter Meetings having not made a single move, after much speculation leading up that would drastically contradict that notion.

There is however a rumor swirling around revolving a new name to surface on the Hot Stove, shortstop Jose Iglesias. Team general manager Al Avila revealed yesterday that multiple teams have called in on the 26-year-old Iglesias, among those the San Diego Padres.

The defensive-minded Iglesias was recently tendered a contract by Detroit and has two years of club control through arbitration. MLBTR projects him to make a little more than $3MM in 2017 through the arbitration stage. Offensively, Iglesias saw a considerable dip in his batting average (.255) and OPS (.643) from his 2015 All-Star campaign (.300 BA, .717 OPS). In his 2+ seasons and 300+ games for the Tigers, he’s slashing .274/.323/.352.

Iglesias has always gotten high remarks for his defense. He posted a career mark .991 fielding percentage at the shortstop position and his +3 defensive runs saved is an improvement of +6 in that category from a year ago.

Detroit definitely has a decision or two to make as spring training draws near. They have another fielding-first shortstop in the system in Dixon Machado. Much like Iglesias, the glove comes before the bat but unlike Iglesias, he’s largely unproven if he can hit enough to be a regular. Iglesias has been an adequate enough hitter with above-average plate discipline in his young career.

The Padres like many teams are one always looking to improve defensively up the middle. The question for the Tigers in any trade involving Iglesias is this: Is the return package satisfying enough, and do they feel Machado is ready to take over? Because as we reiterated awhile back, he is one of four teams who are out of options and can not be sent up and down between the minors as smoothly anymore.
