The NHL trade market is set to ramp up in the next few days, as teams have until Wednesday at 3pm to set their rosters for the playoffs.

As first reported in the 2nd intermission of the Maple Leafs – Canadiens game on Hockey Night in Canada, the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs are discussing two possible moves.

Forward Riley Sheahan and defenseman Brendan Smith are at the forefront of talks to be dealt to Toronto in exchange for draft picks.

Sheahan is stuck in perhaps the most miserable season any Red Wing has had to endure in recent memory, still not able to light the lamp yet in 2016-17. He draws particular interest given his young age (turned 25 back in December) and that he does have a history of being somewhat productive under former Wings coach current Leafs coach Mike Babcock. It will be interesting to see what Detroit GM Ken Holland can get for Sheahan's services, especially given his age and potential.

Smith is a different story. He's set to become a free agent at the end of the season and as much as Detroit will try to re-sign him, he'll likely be traded if Holland can't make progress on an extension. Like Sheahan, Smith has traits that Babcock likes and a reunion of both players and former coach makes the trade seem quite possible.

The Red Wings are sellers at the trade deadline for the first time under Ken Holland, and are set to miss the playoffs for the first time since the early 1990's.

  1. Sheahan stinks and Smith is a turnover machine with Ericsson . To bad Ericsson got hurt or we might be rid of him too .
