Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta had to eat a little humble pie this weekend, all thanks to college football bragging rights.
LaPorta, who starred at Iowa from 2019-2022, found himself on the wrong end of a friendly wager with his position coach, Tyler Roehl. Roehl spent the 2024 season at Iowa State as the Cyclones’ assistant head coach/running backs coach. And when Iowa State edged out Iowa in a 16-13 nail-biter in Week 1, Roehl made sure LaPorta remembered it.

On Sunday, just before Detroit’s Week 2 matchup against the Chicago Bears, LaPorta paid up. The second-year tight end walked into the locker room rocking an Iowa State shirt, completing the terms of the bet and giving his coach some well-deserved bragging rights.

The lighthearted moment drew laughs from teammates, and it’s the kind of bet that keeps the rivalry alive well past Saturdays in the fall. For LaPorta, it might have stung to wear Cyclone colors, but at least he paid his debt like a pro.
