DETROIT, Michigan —
Max Scherzer finally settled in, and Prince Fielder hit the difference making 3-run home run in the bottom of the 6th to give the Detroit Tigers a 4-3 win in the series opener on Monday night.
The Twins took the lead almost immediately, with Josh Willingham sending a solo shot into the seats as just the 3rd batter of the game. Scherzer looked shaky over the first few innings, giving up another run in the 2nd, and one last one in the 4th. However, Mad Max would settle in, and give the Tigers a terrific 7.1 innings, while striking out 10 Twins batters.
Prince Fielder was the difference tonight. His 6th inning home run with 2 men on put the Tigers ahead for good. Andy Dirks also added a 3rd inning solo home run. Dirks also laid down a terrific bunt, and finished 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored.
Drew Smyly came in for a couple batters in the 8th, and 2 more in the 9th, before handing the ball over to Joaquin Benoit to officially nail down the save.
Detroit turns to Justin Verlander in game 2 of the series tomorrow night at 7:08 pm from Comerica Park. Go Tigers!!
