Seniors shine as Spartans roll Buckeyes in season finale, 91-76

On Saturday, four seniors for the Michigan State Spartans were honored prior to their game against the Ohio State Buckeyes – guards and former high school teammates Denzel Valentine and Bryn Forbes, and forwards Matt Costello and Colby Wollenman.

All four were in the starting lineup and chipped in for a 91-76 victory over the Buckeyes to close out the regular season slate.

Michigan State (26-5, 13-5) earns a No. 2 seed in next week’s Big Ten Tournament and the 26 wins in the regular season ties a school record. For the National Player of the Year candidate Valentine, he finishes in very Valentine-fashion. His stat line includes a game-high 27 points, 12 assists, and 4 rebounds.

Costello posted another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Forbes, the nation’s leading three-point shooter, shot just 1-6 from behind the arc but finished with 14 points and was 5-6 from the free throw line.

Wollenman, who will be attending medical school after the season concludes, played six minutes and recorded an assist in today’s victory. The 6-foot-7 Wyoming product has always been a defensive and rebounding stalwart off the bench during his career at Michigan State and has grown to become one of the fan favorite, and certainly one for Spartans head coach Tom Izzo.

The Spartans as a team shot better than 66 percent from the floor on Saturday.

For Ohio State (19-12, 11-7 Big Ten), they head into the conference tournament still seeking for a statement win or two despite racking up 19 wins on the season and a solid record in conference play. The absence of leading scorer Jae’Shawn Tate will affect them moving forward.
