September Roadmap to the Playoffs: Detroit Tigers Edition

While college and pro football tends to dominate the United States sports landscape in the fall, the Detroit Tigers may have something to say about being in the spotlight just a few weeks longer. Instead of hitting the eject button on the season, the Tigers are definitely still relevant.

With two games remaining in August against the Chicago White Sox, Detroit is currently 4.5 games back of the first place Cleveland Indians in the Central Division. In the Wild Card race, Detroit trails the Baltimore Orioles by only one game. A lot can change in the remaining 33 days of the regular season, so, let’s take a look at the Tigers September schedule and carve out a Detroit road map to the postseason.

September 2-4 @ Kansas City Royals

Kansas City Royals

Very quietly the Royals have played themselves back into the playoff picture. Through the Monday docket, Kansas City is 16-4 over their last 20 games and they are 20-7 in the month of August, a franchise-best for wins in a calendar month. That alone makes it important, and the two-time American League champions are hot on everyone’s tails. This is an important series against a team that is white hot right now.

September 5-7 @ Chicago White Sox

Chicago White Sox

Obviously, the 4th place White Sox are not much of a threat to overtake the Tigers in the Central Division standings. However, Chicago is a team that Detroit has hit well this season. Timely hitting has been the key to victory for Detroit this year, and they will need to continue that in this road series.
