Secret to Eric Ebron’s success: “Get away from Detroit, that’s it.”

Former Detroit Lions receiver Eric Ebron wasn’t a fan of how he left the Lions. He and his wife were just about to leave for a vacation in Curacao when he learned he had been cut by the team in a cost cutting measure. The pair decided to postpone the trip until he found a new home in free agency, and soon signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

“It was just poor timing, so it built this just bad taste,” he said. “We ended up just re-planning the trip, everything still went fine, but I just don’t want to put myself in that situation again. So I’m going to leave this time on my own terms. I’m not going to let nobody (decide for me). That was the first time and the last time anyone’s ever done that to me, I’ll make sure of it.”

The move has definitely paid off so far, as Ebron put up career numbers in his first year with the Colts. 66 catches and 750 yards and a trip to the playoffs? He’s happy where he is now, and shared the secret to his numbers.

“All I had to do was get away from Detroit, that’s it,” he said.

However, Ebron clarified his statement, saying he liked his time with the Lions and appreciated the city.

“You got to commend what the city is, it’s a hard-working city, everyone’s out there trying to get it, and they know what they’re about,” he said, before adding that going to Indianapolis last spring “gave me a clearer mind, it gave me a clearer conscious.”

“When I came to this organization, when I just came to Indy it was just like you would think that the grass isn’t greener on the other side, but it is,” Ebron said. “And I say that because Indy, when I first got there, Indy was more all about me than anything else and they did a great job of taking care of me and who I am as a player. So that’s when I say (one thing the organization can do better is) listen to your players, that’s it.”

What could the Lions do better?

“I’m not going to downplay the organization, but there’s a lot of things they can do for their players better, and that’s coming from someone that’s been there four years,” Ebron said. “And build. Just build. Build upon your players, listen to your players and hear what they want because we’re the ones playing the game and we need a little bit more help over there, or they need a little bit more help over there.”
