Stan Van Gundy drops serious knowledge on what it means to be a leader

After an uninspired loss to the Milwaukee Bucks earlier in the week, the Detroit Pistons came out swinging in their 104-81 victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday. Within the game’s first 90 seconds, in fact, Andre Drummond had already eclipsed his season average for blocked shots (granted, he needed only two to surpass his season average, but I digress.)

With Drummond serving as the catalyst, it was the Pistons’ collective effort out of the gate that served as a springboard for head coach Stan Van Gundy’s inspired comments on the true meaning of leadership during his team’s post-game press conference.

In case you hadn’t noticed, SVG keeps it real:

“We have a lot of guys, like in the Milwaukee game, talk about ‘C’mon, we gotta play harder.’ What they need to do, what leadership is–people need to see it. They need to see it. They need to see somebody making defensive plays, making effort. That’s the leadership. Everybody always wants to talk about it in terms of what people say in the locker room and all of that. Everybody’s enamored with that stuff. To hell with that. It’s what you do out on the court that is leadership.”
