Let’s face it: the quarterback situation for the Michigan Wolverines is not good right now. To be fair, there are more issues than just at quarterback. A young and inexperienced offensive line hampered by injuries and first-year players at the skill positions for Michigan have contributed to a sluggish offense so far in 2017. That said, it did not help matters much when returning starter Wilton Speight was injured in the game against Purdue two weeks ago. His replacement, John O’Korn, did not perform well in the loss against the Michigan State Spartans this past Saturday.
The Michigan faithful are wringing their hands waiting for coach Jim Harbaugh to manufacture a quality quarterback out of thin air. That’s not going to happen and the news keeps getting worse for the Wolverines. On Sunday, ESPN college football writer Tom VanHaaren reported that Speight will be out for the season. This news was also reported by Chris Fowler at the top of the UM/MSU broadcast on Saturday night.
“Wilton Speight … he is out, probably for the season,” Fowler said. “He has three broken vertebrae, he told us.”
Not so fast, said Harbaugh in his weekly press conference. Ryan Connors and Land of Ten is reporting that Harbaugh is not ruling out Speight for the rest of this year.
“Multiple weeks,” Harbaugh said during his weekly news conference. “I don’t know that he’ll be out for the year. There’s some cracks in there (the vertebrae). I’m not a doctor, but I think it’s similar to … that’s all I’m going to say.”
It seems that Harbaugh is holding out hope that Speight is able to return this year. It’s obvious after the MSU game that Speight is the best option Michigan has at the moment at quarterback. We’ll all just have to wait and see if his injury subsides enough for him to take more snaps for the Wolverines in 2017.
