On Saturday, news broke that the Detroit Red Wings acquired D Marc Staal and a second-round draft pick from the New York Rangers in exchange for future considerations.
Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman spoke to the media via a Zoom meeting following the trade and he was asked if he “had the appetite” to make more deals like this.

“We're still in a position to do that,” Yzerman told reporters. “We have the cap space. We have roster spots to fill, so we have to be careful — you can get to the cap very quickly — but we're in a position to potentially do future deals like this if they come along.”
Yzerman added that nobody wants to give up picks but sometimes they are in a position where they don't have much of a choice.
“Nobody wants to give up picks or prospects but sometimes you have to do what you have to do to make your team better, and we're trying to — I don't want to take advantage of that, but find teams that are in a position that need to to do that, and again, we're trying to add picks or prospects and at the same time ice a team.”
I asked Steve Yzerman if he had any appetite to do more deals like this, using his cap space to acquire picks, this offseason. Here's his answer: pic.twitter.com/Q6OgiASLpR
