NHL gets it right, and wrong, with Kronwall suspension

The Detroit Red Wings will be without their top defenseman Niklas Kronwall for Game 7 on Wednesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kronwall was suspended for 1 game for “Charging” after he laid one of his patented “Kronwalled” hits on Tampa F Nikita Kucherov. As hard as it is to admit, the suspension was justified. What’s a little more difficult to admit, is that the NHL is treating this case just like any other questionable hit in the playoffs.

Shea Weber to the Red Wings, and other RFA Moves

On Saturday, I took a look at some of the potential free agents-to-be this coming summer. In a relatively thin UFA market, one of the players I discussed just signed a contract extension this morning. Craig Anderson, who I predicted would get a deal in the 4 year, $4M per season range. He re-upped with the Senators for (you guessed it) for years and $3.1875 a year. A little less than what I had predicted, but you can guarantee if he had hit the open market that number would be higher.

Wings Can’t Solve Rinne

Well,  so much for that whole “what players do we make healthy scratches” issue. Tonight, the Red Wings played one man under the limit of 18 skaters, because Jiri Hudler (flu), Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), and Johan Franzen (undisclosed) were all unavailable. They could have gone with 7 defensemen to offset the loss up front, but Ruslan Salei is still in California with his family after the birth of he and his wife’s third child.
