Red Wings Draft Picks: Xavier Ouellet

Prior to the draft, I had hopes that the Wings would be able to acquire one of the top-end defensemen, like Joe Morrow or Connor Murphy. When Murphy went in the late teens and Morrow went to Pittsburgh with the pick before Detroit’s, the Wings felt comfortable enough to trade down from the 24th pick.

Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill said at that time that there were several players they liked at 24, and they figured some of them would still be available at 35. Upon reaching that conclusion, they called up Ottawa and consummated the deal.

With the 48th pick, the Wings began addressing their need for talented blue liners to help restock the cupboard.
